Situational Awareness In Shopping Centres / Malls

The Criminal Agenda

Criminals are waiting in their vehicles in the parking area to see who, what vehicle model or perhaps a vulnerable person is entering the area to select their victim.

Vehicle jamming

  • A small normal gate remote is used to jam the signal from your car remote and this causes your car not to lock.
  • Another method they use is to open one of the car doors and that is how they gain access to your car.
  • Test your vehicle’s door!
  • Pay attention to who is parked next to you. Take a minute to observe you might have to move to another parking spot or rather visit the mall tomorrow…

Situational Awareness is Key!!!!

Mall Crime Syndicates

Criminals work in groups, the syndicates’ exits of about 3 to 15 individuals. People ranging from toddlers to grownups men and women. Moving from store to store, they select their victim.

  • In store – pay attention while using your purse, take note of who is around you.

Returning to your vehicle

  • Be prepared – have your money ready for the pay station and your car keys ready for your vehicle. Make eye contact with the people around you.
  • Take a moment to observe the area
  • Do not get into your vehicle when there is a car parked close to you with people just sitting in their car
  • Go back to the entrance and ask for assistance from a security guard
  • While placing your shopping in the car, be aware of your surroundings
  • Do not wear sunglasses going to your car – maintain eye contact with people around you
